ROOTS: Nature

This season, the NTSO will be exploring the theme of ROOTS, exploring the elements
that root us to who we are, where we’re from, and what matters.
Our first ROOTS concert, “Nature,” immerses us in both the beauty and terror of
mother nature’s power. From Beethoven’s babbling brook to Portland-based
composer Lisa Neher’s violent tornado, we find ourselves in awe. For we can never
truly understand nature; we can only bear witness to it. Indeed, by humbly bearing
witness, we take the first step to loving and protecting the natural world, which is the
subject of And Birds Are Still…op. 72, a deeply poignant work by one of Japan’s most
prolific contemporary composers, Takeshi Yoshimatsu.
