Orchestra of New Spain presents
Epiphany at Christ the King
Padre Antonio Soler and the Christmas villancico!
Christ the King Catholic Church, 6 PM
Moving from Christmas to Epiphany in celebration of the most anticipated day for children in the Spanish speaking world, we present this concert of Baroque villancicios from Spain and Latin America in the glorious presence and sound of Christ the King Catholic Church.
The prolific Padre Antonio Soler wrote 130 villancicios of which three are presented in this Epiphany program. Full of rhythm and joy, they are music of the common people with witty tales of everyday Spanish life. The program includes a work of Francisco Courcelle using mythical metaphors, a beautiful trio of voices from Cuban Esteban Salas’ The Sky and Its Stars, a comical piece by Mexico’s Juan Gutierrez de Padilla, and several rhythmic villancicos from Bolivia.
Join us for a Reception following the concert!
