Lone Star Youth Winds Presents
Director Andrew Trachsel and the Lone Star Youth Winds welcomes composer John Mackey to Moody Performance Hall with performances of Aurora Awakes and Sacred Spaces along with the consortium “premiere” of Let Me Be Frank With You. Former Youth Winds Concerto Competition winner Matthew Davis returns to perform Yasuhide Ito’s Fantasy Variations. The Youth Winds will also feature the beautiful River Shannon by Julie Giroux, a piece commissioned for the Lone Star Global Ensemble project back in March 2020.
About the featured composer:
John Mackey has written for orchestras (Brooklyn Philharmonic, New York Youth Symphony), theater (Dallas Theater Center), and extensively for dance (Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Parsons Dance Company, New York City Ballet), but the majority of his work for the past decade has been for wind ensembles, and his band catalog now receives annual performances numbering in the thousands. In 2014, he became the youngest composer ever inducted into the American Bandmasters Association. In 2018, he received the Wladimir & Rhoda Lakond Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
