Details

Powerful and poignant, Awake shares stories of injustice and loss in work by Wood, McKinney, and Smith, paired with Lar Lubovitch’s sweeping choreography in Dvořák Serenade.

Headlining Awake is the Dallas premiere of the balletic Dvořák Serenade by Lar Lubovitch. Set to four movements from Dvořák’s exuberant Serenade in E Major, Opus 22, this masterpiece delivers romance, joy, and his signature lush and layered choreography.

Known for his powerful imagery and inventive partnering, acclaimed choreographer Garrett Smith fights for freedom of expression in Forbidden Paths. Originally commissioned and premiered by Bruce Wood Dance in 2019, Forbidden Paths portrays a world of passionate determination and quiet tenderness.

Bruce Wood’s Our Last Lost Chance is an intimate story of love and loss. Set to an atmospheric score by Olafur Arnalds, this wistful prayer explores the universal conditions of vulnerability and longing. Ethereal yet grounded, Our Last Lost Chance is a moving work full of breathless yearning and solace.

Awake includes the screening of Promise Me You’ll Sing My Song, a short film based on the life of Mr. Reuben Johnson who was lynched in Mountain Creek, TX in 1874. Created in collaboration with Adam W. McKinney and The Digibees, Promise Me You’ll Sing My Song celebrates the invincibility of the human spirit and the lasting power of standing up for the truth. This award-winning film has been lauded at festivals across the country.

Join Bruce Wood Dance for Awake November 18 + 19 at Moody Performance Hall. Curtain Chats with the creators and the dancers follow each performance.
