Mozart’s Solemn Vespers

Courcelle’s Italian Mass and solo cantatas

An early choral work composed for the Salzburg Cathedral, Mozart’s Solemn Vespers are an expressive liturgical piece that in spite of restrictions by Archbishop Colloredo, manage to include subtle references to opera and counterpoint in its structure of six movements – from exuberance to tranquility to a finale Magnificat. Inclusion of three sackbuts doubles the effect of chorus.

Also on the program is Courcelle’s Italian Mass, composed in 1731 while creating an opera in Venice, this work preceded his move to the royal court of Madrid.
