DNCB in collaboration with SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts presents

Futurisme à Pied
An afternoon of Dadaist/Futurist dance and music from the interwar period.

Sunday, April 30, 7 pm | Dallas City Performance Hall

Continuing its partnership with Meadows School of the Arts, Dallas Neo-Classical Ballet presents Futurisme à Pied, a two-act performance premiering in the Dallas Arts District.

Act I opens with a re-staging of composer Erik Satie’s innovative Parade in celebration of the centenary of the work’s production by the Ballets Russes. Texas/Mexico Artist, Francisco Moreno, re-envisions Picasso’s Cubist costumes and sets with a modern pop culture twist. SMU’s contemporary music ensemble, SYZYGY provides live music again this season, conducted by Hannah Threlkeld. 391, a new work composed by SYZYGY Director, Lane Harder, follows Parade. Titled after the Dadaist magazine in publication from 1917-1924 (created by artist Francis Picabia), it features choreography by DNCB Artistic Director, Emilie Skinner.

Act II will include two premiere works. The first is set to Edgard Varèse’s Ionisation, a score for 13 percussionists. With choreography by company member, Kayla Davey, Ionisation will be accompanied by SMU’s Meadow Percussion Ensemble under the direction of Jon D. Lee. The program will conclude with choreography by Ballet Mistress and Principal Dancer, Erin Boone. Set to the groundbreaking composition Ballet Mécanique, by George Antheil – complete with airplane propellers — the piece will also be paired with a screening of Ballet Mécanique’s Dadist post-Cubist art film by Dudley Murphy and Fernand Léger.
